Yesterday i was driving and my 250 gps beeped, i looked at the screen and it
said firmware was updated ... i didnt know this was possible via sat. anyone
else notice this ? and is it a update that i wont notice or is it something
useful ?
That happened to me a few months ago too, and I was quite surprised. I
too thought that the satellites did not carry any proprietary data, but
I guess I was wrong.

Are you sure? Or was it perhaps asking for a map update?

It doesn't sound normal to me. I don't have 250, but my Nuvi 680 only
does it
- After I manually installed some updates, then when *first turn on* it may
ask or reminding me that it will install the update (usually MSNDirect).

It's not possible. It was some minor glitch in your Nuvi.
